WT have been involved in two schemes in the Sydney area (clients confidential) where the use of geothermal energy has been proposed in lieu of traditional heating and cooling sources. In these schemes water passing through either pipework or vertical bored pipework uses the relatively constant temperature of the ground and a system of energy and heat pumps to provide heating and cooling to the space conditioning systems.
WT were involved in the assessment of both capital and operational / life cycle costings of these schemes to assess their financial viability. The assessment included not just the capital cost evaluations of the geothermal and traditional systems but also constructability issues, particularly with the duration of the boring works and its impacts on the overall construction sequencing, and sensitivity analysis around the future cost of electricity and gas.
